Cape Town, South Africa
In September 2007, Champions of Caring launched its first global program site in Cape Town, South Africa. Our collaborating partner is MaAfrika Tikkun, a South African NGO of which Nelson Mandela was an honorary chair. The organization’s title reflects the Hebrew word “tikkun”, meaning “to repair the world”. MaAfrika adopted the Champions model for a pilot program for twenty young people in Cape Town, and has since expanded the program to reach over 200 students throughout South Africa. Students were matched with partners participating in the Ambassadors of Caring program in Philadelphia, and have communicated via email. Students in Philadelphia and South Africa have learned the importance of thinking and acting both locally and globally!
A special thanks to Marc Lubner, CEO of MaAfrika Tikkun and his Cape Town staff
