Empowering people of all ages and backgrounds to take positive action NOW!

A message from our founder, Barbara Greenspan Shaiman:

I founded Champions of Caring in 1995 because of my grave concern about the incidents of violence, bigotry and indifference that plagued our nation. I was outraged by the daily occurrences of racism, religious intolerance and homophobia. I felt that we cannot remain silent and indifferent in the face of ignorance, hatred, prejudice, violence, poverty and need.

Since its inception, Champions of Caring has offered community and school-based programs that nurture the development of character, compassion and engaged citizenship. Given our success in Philadelphia and the findings of our longitudinal study, we have updated our mission and program offerings to activate these learnings more broadly across generations and around the globe.

My family, Carola, Golda and Henry Greenspan were survivors of the Holocaust. My mother and grandmother survived Auschwitz. My mother was the sole survivor of a family of 65 people and my father worked for Oskar Schindler, whose life was the basis for Steven Spielberg’s film, Schindler’s List. I began Champions of Caring with the deep desire to prevent atrocities like the Holocaust from ever happening again, to anyone or any group.

Today, our inter-generational team is focused on inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to make impactful contributions to our world.

Activating change agents.

“We live in a world where violence, racism, hate crimes, and social inequities are overwhelming and feel insurmountable. I feel people of all ages and backgrounds can live more meaningful lives by creating projects for social growth and social change. We have the power to create change.

This is a call to action.”
