A message from our founder, Barbara Greenspan Shaiman:

I founded Champions of Caring in 1995 because of my grave concern about the incidents of violence, bigotry and indifference that plagued our nation. I was outraged by the daily occurrences of racism, religious intolerance and homophobia. I felt that we cannot remain silent and indifferent in the face of ignorance, hatred, prejudice, violence, poverty and need.

My parents, Carola and Henry Greenspan, and paternal grandmother, Golda Greenspan, survived the Holocaust. My mother was the sole survivor of a family of 65 people and my father worked for Oskar Schindler, whose life was the basis for Steven Spielberg’s film, Schindler’s List. I began Champions of Caring with the deep desire to prevent atrocities like the Holocaust from ever happening again, to anyone or any group.

Champions of Caring is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to sensitizing, educating, and empowering people to take active roles in improving their communities. Since its inception, Champions of Caring has offered community and school-based programs that nurture the development of character, compassion and caring. Ten thousand high school students from the greater Philadelphia region have contributed 1 million hours of service, locally, nationally and globally. Research studies conducted over the years have shown that our programs help reduce prejudice, encourage service and promote positive community change and social justice.

We are currently creating a documentary that will focus on ten Champions of Caring who are now in their 30’s and 40’s and continue to be social activists, teaching these values of giving back to their children. The Coral Ring Legacy documentary will show the power of the individual and collective possibility to create extraordinary change. Educational materials are available on our website to help individuals of all ages and backgrounds to create social justice projects.

We don’t have to accept living in a world where violence, poverty and hatred feel overwhelming. The Coral Ring Legacy is a call to action. Let’s create a global community of intergenerational change makers. The time is now. Please join us.
